Matheesha Pathirana, known for his different bowling actions, made a powerful statement during a training session at MA Chidambaram Stadium. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer sent down a delivery that swung away after pitching, crashing into the stumps with force.
The impact was so intense that the ball ricocheted dangerously, nearly hitting a support staff member who barely dodged it in time. This display of raw pace and movement signalled that Pathirana is back in rhythm, setting the stage for his return in the upcoming season.
Injury Woes and Struggles with Form
Pathirana has been one of CSK’s key assets, retained in the auction as part of the team’s core. In 20 IPL games spread across three seasons, he has taken 34 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 7.83, a remarkable feat considering he often bowls in the death overs.
However, injuries have repeatedly hindered his progress. His unorthodox action, which exerts immense pressure on his shoulders, back, and legs, has made him susceptible to fitness setbacks. Last season, he was forced out after just six games due to a hamstring injury.
His recent performances in international and franchise cricket have not been promising. During Sri Lanka’s tour of New Zealand, he conceded 97 runs in eight overs while picking up only two wickets. In the SA T20 tournament, he managed just three wickets in six matches, conceding runs at an economy rate of 10.47. These figures have raised concerns, but Pathirana remains optimistic about turning things around.
The Dhoni Factor, A Guiding Influence
Despite his struggles, Pathirana finds solace in his bond with MS Dhoni, whom he considers a mentor. The young pacer credits the CSK captain for shaping his cricketing journey.
“After my father, in my cricket life, mostly he (Dhoni) is playing my father’s role. He always takes care of me and gives me some advice on what I have to do – similar to my father when I’m in my home,” Pathirana shared on CSK’s Lions Up Close show.
Dhoni’s influence extends beyond just tactical guidance. Pathirana appreciates his captain’s ability to instill confidence in him with minimal words.
“I think that’s enough. He’s not telling a lot of things when I’m on the field and off the field. He’s just telling me small things, but it makes a lot of difference, and it makes a lot of confidence for me,” he said, emphasizing Dhoni’s leadership style. As he prepares for the upcoming IPL season, Pathirana hopes his association with CSK and Dhoni will help him rediscover his best form.
