Matthew Kuhnemann’s Bowling Action Review Under ICC Scrutiny

Matthew Kuhnemann, the Australian left-arm spinner, is awaiting a crucial verdict from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the legality of his bowling action. Following an intense testing process at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, the findings are expected to determine whether he can continue bowling or needs to make adjustments.

Matthew Kuhnemann’s Bowling Action Under Scrutiny

Kuhnemann’s action came under suspicion during Australia’s recent 2-0 Test series win in Sri Lanka. Despite being the leading wicket-taker in the Warne-Muralidaran Trophy with 16 wickets at an impressive average of 17.18, his delivery style raised concerns, leading to an official report.

Under ICC rules, any bowler suspected of illegal action must undergo biomechanical testing. The primary focus is on the degree of elbow extension, which must not exceed 15 degrees during delivery. If a bowler is found guilty of exceeding this limit, they are suspended from bowling until they can prove corrective measures.

Intensive Testing Conducted in Brisbane

The testing took place at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, where Kuhnemann underwent a thorough one-hour evaluation. He was required to bowl deliveries at a speed and spin rate matching his performance in Sri Lanka. High-speed cameras, 3D motion analysis, and marker-based tracking technology were used to capture his movements. This cutting-edge assessment determines whether his elbow extension surpasses the permissible limit.

CA said in a statement said, “Matthew has completed the assessment which was performed at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane. The ICC will make a determination in due course. Neither Cricket Australia nor Matthew will be making any public comment at this time.”

ICC’s Decision-Making Process

The ICC allows a maximum of 15-degree elbow extension during delivery. This ensures fair play and prevents unfair advantages. The ICC panel will analyze the data and decide whether Kuhnemann’s action is legal. This decision is expected within the next week.

If Matthew Kuhnemann is cleared, he will be allowed to continue bowling without restrictions. In the case of a partial ban, he may be restricted from using certain deliveries. If suspended due to exceeding the limit, he will need to modify his action before returning to play.

Support from the Australian Cricket Community

Stand-in captain Steven Smith expressed surprise at the report, stating that Kuhnemann had played professional cricket for eight years without issues.

Smith said, “It’s come as a bit of a surprise to me. He has been playing for eight years in professional cricket and nothing has been said in that amount of time. I am thinking of him, at present, he has to go through the process. We’re confident he will pass. He will go through that process back home, we wish him all the best.”

Cricket Australia has refrained from making public statements, awaiting the ICC’s verdict. If cleared, he will resume playing for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield and be available for Australia’s tour of the West Indies.
