England head coach Brendon McCullum has openly acknowledged that the team’s planning for the Ashes tour of Australia fell short, conceding that key decisions before the series did not deliver the desired outcomes. England arrived with confidence, believing they could achieve a rare series win in Australia for the first time since 2010–11.
Instead, heavy defeats in Perth and Brisbane, followed by another loss in Adelaide, ended the contest in just 11 days. Reflecting on the setbacks, McCullum admitted, “What did we get right? What did we get wrong? Probably we go back to the preparation, that’ll be something that gets questioned,” before adding, “And when you’ve lost 3-0, you need to put your hand up and say ‘maybe I didn’t get that preparation right’.”
The criticism has been widespread, with former captains questioning England’s limited warm-up schedule and tactical calls. The decision to play only one practice match, against England Lions, and to skip a pink-ball fixture ahead of the day-night Test raised eyebrows. McCullum accepted responsibility, stating, “I didn’t get that right because we lost 3-0. Lots to digest, look through and be better next time.”
Selection Dilemmas And Tactical Choices
With two Tests remaining in Melbourne and Sydney, England is considering subtle changes rather than wholesale alterations. Under-pressure batters face scrutiny, but McCullum ruled out calling in outside replacements. He explained, “We’ll have a look at the conditions (in Melbourne) and, as we always do, we’ll try and work out what we think will give us the best chance in that game.” Emphasising flexibility, he added, “If that changes, it’s changes. If it’s not, it’s not. We’ll assess that when we get to Melbourne.”
Pride, Perspective And A Chance To Respond
Brendon McCullum accepted that England had been comprehensively outplayed, but believes the tour still offers value beyond results. He pointed to signs of fight and belief, saying, “We do have a great opportunity in the next two Tests.” The focus now is on restoring pride and repaying supporters. As he put it, “We need to find something out of this tour, salvage some pride and play for all the people who have come to Australia to support this team and all the people back in England who have supported this team as well.”
Looking ahead, McCullum stressed mindset over mechanics, concluding, “If we get into that state where we just play the game and immerse ourselves in the state of what needs to be done and allow your talent to come out in pressure situations, then you’ve got every opportunity.”
