Michael Vaughan Comments On The Test Statistics Of Virat Kohli And Joe Root

Michael Vaughan, the previous captain of England, has made a comparison between the career numbers of Virat Kohli and Joe Root in Tests via a post made on X (previously Twitter). This information was shared on social media one day after Root had scored 143 runs off 206 balls during the second Test match against Sri Lanka in their ongoing series.

With 33 centuries, he has moved past Kane Williamson and Steve Smith who both have 32 hundreds each as well as being part of Fab 4 players. Kohli also stands out with his 29 tons among this elite group. Furthermore, while batting, Root matched Alastair Cook’s achievement of having most Test centuries from England.

On Friday (August 30), Vaughan wrote on X:

Whether or not Vaughan was taking an indirect shot at Kohli’s Test figures is something that cannot be confirmed. One thing that stands out is that the current highest run-scorer amongst Test players is none other than Joe Root.

The right-handed batsman has made a total of 12131 runs in 263 innings with an average of 50.33 which includes 33 tons and 64 half-centuries. Furthermore, he has also managed to hit five double centuries when playing in this particular format.

In fact, Root has scored 4451 runs from 87 innings since 2021 comprising 16 centuries and 15 fifties during that period alone. As a result, at the age of 33 years old, he seems likely to surpass the great Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) for most Test runs ever scored.

In the meantime, Kohli has a total of 8848 runs with 49.15 as the mean in an innings of 191. This Delhi batsman has posted 29 hundred and 30 fifties in his Test career so far. He has also smashed seven double-hundreds during the span of his Test career.

As far as since 2021 is concerned, Kohli has accumulated 1530 runs in 44 innings which include two hundred and seven half-centuries.

In total including all formats, Virat Kohli has made 26942 runs from 533 matches with an average of 80 centuries. On the other hand, Joe Root owns 19546 runs made through 347 matches across all formats including 49 international hundreds.

Joe Root dedicates his 33rd Test century to Graham Thorpe

Because Graham Thorpe, England’s former cricket legend, committed suicide earlier this month, Joe Root has dedicated his 33rd Test century to him. According to Root through ESPNcricinfo, he stated:

“I’ve been fortunate to work with many individuals, including senior players, coaches, and mentors, and Thorpey was one of those who provided me with tremendous support.”

“It was comforting to think of him at that moment. He’s someone I will deeply miss. He invested a lot in my game and career, and without his assistance, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today,” he continued.

Joe Root is very close to becoming the all-time leading run-scorer in Tests for England. He is only behind cook (12472) at the moment. In this format, no other player has scored more than 10,000 runs for England.
