Mitchell Starc Calls Time On T20I Career To Prioritize Tests And ODIs

Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc has brought the curtain down on his T20 International career, confirming that he will now channel his energy toward Test cricket and ODIs. The 35-year-old quick, known for his devastating yorkers and pace, leaves the shortest format after playing 65 matches and claiming 79 wickets, making him Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is behind spinner Adam Zampa.

In his retirement statement, Starc emphasized that Test cricket remains his biggest passion, while ODIs are still central to his long-term plans. By stepping away from T20Is, he hopes to preserve his fitness and extend his international career in formats he values most.

Eye on Major Tours and 2027 World Cup

Explaining his decision, Starc said the move would help him stay fresh for crucial upcoming series such as Australia’s Test tour of India, the Ashes in England, and the 2027 ODI World Cup. He pointed out that managing workload is critical at this stage of his career, and narrowing his focus will allow him to contribute at the highest level for longer.

Starc also reflected on the team’s needs, noting that by stepping aside now, Australia’s T20 squad will have more time to develop a strong bowling attack ahead of the next World Cup in the format. His absence from the recently announced squad for the T20I series against New Zealand had already hinted at the impending decision.

Legacy and Recognition

Cricket Australia lauded Starc’s decision and celebrated his contributions in T20 cricket. George Bailey, the chairman of selectors, praised his ability to “blow games open” and highlighted his match-winning spells during the 2021 T20 World Cup, which Australia won. Todd Greenberg, Cricket Australia CEO, echoed similar sentiments, describing him as a bowler who always put the team’s needs above personal ambition.

Starc’s career in T20Is was marked by raw pace, deadly yorkers, and an ability to swing the ball both ways, making him a nightmare for batters around the world. Though he now steps away from the shortest format, his sights are firmly set on leaving a lasting impact in Tests and ODIs — formats where his skill set and experience remain invaluable.
