On Day 1 of the second Test of the The Ashes 2025–26 at The Gabba, Mitchell Starc achieved a remarkable feat — he became the most successful left-arm fast bowler in the history of Test cricket. With his 415th wicket, Starc overtook the long-standing record of Wasim Akram, who had taken 414 wickets during his illustrious career.

Starc reached the milestone in his 102nd Test match, while Akram had set his record over 104 Tests. The record-breaking moment came when Starc dismissed Harry Brook — having already removed Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope earlier that day — cementing his place at the top of the all-time wickets list for left-arm pacers.

The Day’s Work: How the Record Fell

Starc began the day in Brisbane just two wickets shy of the record. He struck early by dismissing Ben Duckett for a golden duck in the very first over. Soon after, he trapped Ollie Pope to bring himself level with Akram — and with another wicket in the same match, he would become the record-holder.

That defining wicket came when Harry Brook edged a full delivery to the slip cordon, where an alert catch sealed Starc’s entry into the record books. His performance that day — three wickets in the innings — sealed a historic milestone and underlined his dominance.

Cementing a Legacy, and the Bigger Picture

This achievement isn’t an isolated highlight but rather a reaffirmation of Starc’s enduring excellence. Over his career, he has consistently demonstrated pace, swing, accuracy and stamina — qualities that have made him a central figure in Australia’s pace attack.

Moreover — and perhaps fittingly — Starc achieved this record during a day/night “pink-ball” Test, a format where he has often thrived. His ability to exploit movement under lights and adapt his bowling to the conditions has often given him the edge.

By overtaking a legend like Wasim Akram, Starc has not only rewritten the record books but also reset the benchmark for future left-arm pacers. His feat adds a new chapter in modern Test cricket — one that blends raw pace with adaptability across evolving formats.
