Cricket fans in Mumbai are always on the lookout for two iconic tournaments, the Indian Premier League and the Mitstui Shoji Mumbai Amateur Premier League.

This league is being conducted primarily to give an opportunity to all the grass-root players to rub shoulders with the Ranji Trophy players, players representing Indian national team and some overseas players, get to interact with them and gain experience.

Normally many such talented players tend to fade away with time due to lack of follow-up and guidance. To obviate imbalance and to provide equal opportunity to all the talented players to showcase their skill and to go on to the next level, Jwala Sports Foundation (JSF) has taken this positive step.

This tournament is organised by Mumbai Cricket Club (MCC) under the aegis of Jwala Sports Foundation..

Mr Jwala Singh has been the brain behind this tournament and has been successfully conducting it for the past five years.

The selection trials for the sixth edition were held on the Mumbai Police Gymkhana Ground on 26th April, 2016. The selectors, former Mumbai Ranji Trophy players, Santosh Shinde, Vinayak Samant, and Bhavan Thakkar, were keeping a close watch on the 300-odd probables those who had appeared in response to an advertisement published in the local newspaper.

Mr Jwala Singh, MD, JSF, also the chief organiser, supervised the trials. He told DNA that a total of 27 players were shortlisted including 13 batsmen, 8 medium pacers and 6 spinners. The players will be included in five teams namely, Bandra Heroes, Thane Marathas, Shivaji Park Warriors, Ghatkopar Jets and Mumbai Police City Riders.

Every year, looking at the growing popularity of this tournament, new sponsors have joined the bandwagon. Mr Singh said companies like Tata Motors, Jaipan, Sagar Sameer International are some who have been extending support over the years

The tournament is also supported by Radio Partners 108.8 FM. Doordarshan also support the tournament.

Earlier times this tournament also has received the blessings of the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

Mumbai star cricketers like Wasim Jaffer,  Amol Muzumdar, Omkar Khanvilkar, Vinayak Mane, Javed Khan, Kamran Khan, Vishal Dhawalkar, Amit Dhani, Rajesh Powar and Bhaven Pate have associated themselves with this league.

Former BCCI Chief of Selection Committee, Dilip Vengsarkar, have heaped a lot of praise on the organisers and the tournament and expressed extreme pleasure in the cause undertaken by the foundation.
