Veteran Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has been fined 15 percent of his match fee following a breach of the ICC’s Code of Conduct during a tense T20 World Cup 2026 encounter. The incident took place during Afghanistan’s dramatic clash against South Africa, a match that eventually went down to a thrilling Super Over finish.
According to the official statement, Nabi was found guilty of violating “Article 2.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel”, which relates to failing to comply with an umpire’s instruction during an international fixture.
Along with the financial penalty, he was also handed one demerit point — his first offence in a 24-month period. The ICC confirmed that the experienced cricketer accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee, meaning there was no requirement for a formal disciplinary hearing.
Dispute Over Equipment Sparks Controversy
The controversy unfolded at the beginning of the 14th over of Afghanistan’s innings. Nabi engaged in an extended discussion with the on-field umpires regarding South African pacer Lungi Ngidi and the wrist-band he was wearing while bowling. Nabi appeared to question whether the accessory was affecting visibility and potentially creating difficulty for the batter in picking up the ball clearly.
Despite the umpires reviewing the concern, play was allowed to continue, and Nabi’s disagreement persisted longer than permitted under the regulations. Match officials subsequently deemed his conduct to be in breach of the code. The charge was levelled by the officiating team, and the ICC reiterated that players are expected to respect on-field decisions to maintain the spirit of the game.
A Thrilling Match Overshadowed
While the disciplinary matter drew headlines, the match itself was one of the most dramatic contests of the tournament so far. Afghanistan pushed South Africa to the limit, with the game ultimately being decided after two Super Overs in a nail-biting conclusion. The spectacle highlighted Afghanistan’s growing competitiveness on the global stage.
However, the spotlight shifted to Nabi’s actions rather than the contest’s quality. The ICC’s swift response emphasised its commitment to upholding discipline and ensuring that players adhere strictly to match officials’ rulings. With the fine imposed and the matter settled, Afghanistan will now aim to refocus on their campaign as the T20 World Cup progresses.
