Mohammed Shami, the Indian fast bowler is back in the news, but not for his performance, but for allegedly committing a crime. Shami played the semi-final match of the Champions Trophy 2025 between India and Australia and picked 3 wickets by giving away 48 runs in 10 overs. While this sounds like an exceptional performance, the President of All India Muslim Jamaat, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi is unhappy with Shami.
Razvi said that Shami is a criminal because he drank water or something else during the match and didn’t fast as per the tradition of Ramadan. Razvi said that Shami should not have done this. During Ramadan, Muslims observe a fast called Roza. At this time, Muslims don’t eat or drink anything, including water. You can watch the video below.
Md Shami is a criminal for not observing fast during Ramzan and choosing to play for his country over his faith… He has sent the wrong message to the Muslim community.

Razvi is unhappy with the actions of Mohammed Shami. While he hasn’t provoked any community to take action against him, his stern comments will definitely spark a debate over what’s right and what’s wrong.
Twitter/X users have expressed their dissatisfaction over the comments made by Razvi. They believe that Shami was on national duty and thus drinking water is a personal choice, not a crime. Check out some of the replies to the comments from Razvi below.
Prioritizing national duty over religious rituals is a personal choice, not a crime.
This mindset of policing faith instead of valuing hard work is the real problem.
Shami’s dedication to his sport is an inspiration, not a "wrong message to muslims."— YK Rajesh (@Y_K_Rajesh) March 6, 2025
Everyone has the right to prioritize their profession or faith as they choose. Cricket is Shami’s duty, and personal beliefs shouldn't dictate his patriotism. Faith is personal, not for public judgment.

Statements like these from Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, questioning personal choices of individuals like Mohammed Shami, only deepen divisions in our country. Prioritizing national duty over religious observance is a matter of personal freedom, not a crime. Such remarks undermine…

That's a ridiculous statement! 🇮🇳 Shami is a proud Indian who prioritizes his profession and nation. Personal faith is a choice, and no one should dictate how someone practices it.

Mohammed Shami Having a Great Champions Trophy 2025
Shami is having a great Champions Trophy 2025. So far, in four matches, he has picked up 8 wickets. Against Bangladesh, Shami had picked a fifer. He is making a comeback after a long break due to injury. His absence would have been a big loss for India which doesn’t have Bumrah in the squad due to a back injury. Being the most experienced bowler in the attack, Shami will be one of the key bowlers New Zealand will have to watch out for in the finals against India.
Champions Trophy 2025 will conclude on March 9, 2025 when India will take on New Zealand in the finals. India has a point to prove, and so does New Zealand. Stay tuned for more updates.
