Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has often faced online trolling, especially after high-profile matches against Pakistan. One of the most notable incidents occurred following India’s defeat to Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup, where he was subjected to relentless abuse on social media.
Recently, Shami was asked whether Muslim cricketers, in particular, are unfairly targeted in such situations. His answer was straightforward and reflected his focus on the game rather than the negativity around it.
Shami made it clear that he does not allow online abuse to affect him. He explained that as a professional athlete, failures and successes are both part of the journey. “I am not a machine,” he pointed out, emphasizing that his duty is to work hard and perform for the team, even if results don’t always go in his favor. For him, playing for the country outweighs all other considerations.
Focus on the Game, Not Trolls
According to Shami, social media reactions—whether positive or negative—do not help players when they are in the middle of a tournament or series. He admitted that he deliberately avoids browsing through such comments during matches because they can create unnecessary distractions. “When you play for your country, your only priority is winning games and taking wickets,” he said.
Shami also highlighted the difference between constructive criticism and disrespectful trolling. He acknowledged that true fans never resort to personal attacks. Instead, they support players through good and bad times. To those who question his performance, he issued a challenge—if they believe they can do better, they are welcome to try. His message was clear: effort on the field requires dedication and sacrifice, unlike typing a few harsh lines online.
Career Achievements and Future Plans
Despite facing criticism in the past, Shami’s record speaks for itself. He has represented India in 64 Test matches, claiming 229 wickets, alongside 206 wickets in 108 ODIs and 27 scalps in 25 T20 internationals. His standout performance came in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he finished as the tournament’s top wicket-taker with 24 dismissals. More recently, he was India’s joint-highest wicket-taker in the 2025 Champions Trophy with nine wickets.
Looking ahead, Shami dismissed any speculation about retirement. Instead, he reaffirmed his commitment to the sport, stating that he is prepared to feature in domestic cricket to earn his spot back in the national team. His resilience both on and off the field highlights why he continues to be one of India’s most reliable fast bowlers, unfazed by negativity and focused on the game he loves.
