MS Dhoni had his own unique and effective style when he captained India. The former India skipper always emphasised on the fact that bowlers win you matches especially away from home. He was never someone who would wear his heart on his sleeves on a cricket field. Dhoni always kept his emotions under check even when a bowler got frustrated. However, the veteran lost his cool at times and Mohammed Shami recalled one such incident in an Instagram chat with Bengal teammate Manoj Tiwary.
Shami revealed that once in 2014 Dhoni pulled him up for bowling an unnecessary bouncer in a Test match. India was New Zealand in Wellington when Mohammed Shami attempted a bouncer. The fast bowler was frustrated as Brendon McCullum was dropped by Virat Kohli and he went on to make a triple century. The New Zealand batsman went on to pile on the runs and scored 302 off 559 balls. Shami decided to bowl a bouncer that flew over Dhoni’s head and went for 4 byes.

“After McCullum was dropped on 14, on that day, we thought it’s alright we will send him back soon. He continued batting till tea and the day was about to end, so I asked Virat why did you drop him”, Shami told Manoj Tiwary on Instagram.
“McCullum went on to score 300 runs, on that day before lunch another batsman was dropped again. I ran in and bowled a bouncer which went over Mahi Bhai’s head. As we were heading towards the dressing room, he came to me and said that I know the catch was drooped but you should have bowled that last ball properly”.

Shami than tried to defend himself and told Dhoni that the ball slipped out of his hands. Dhoni then told his fast bowler that he is his senior and captain, he knows everything and he can’t be fooled. “Mahi bhai ne muje thode tight language mei bola, ‘Dekh beta, bohot log aye mere samne. Bohot log khel ke chle gye tu jhoot mt bol. Bete tumhare senior and Captain hain hum. Ye bewakoof kissi aur ko banana”.
Mohammed Shami than later also praised his former captain and said that he kept on learning from him. “I have made my debut in all three formats under, Mahi Bhai. You can only keep on learning from him, he’s such a brilliant individual”, Shami concluded.
