Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj openly addressed the surprise of being left out of India’s 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, a tournament India is co-hosting with Sri Lanka beginning in early February. Siraj, who has been one of India’s more experienced pacers, acknowledged that missing out on the marquee event was disappointing but handled the situation with maturity and perspective.
Reflecting on what such tournaments mean to international cricketers, he said, “For a player, playing in a World Cup is a dream; playing for your country is even better,” underlining the significance of the event for any sportsperson. Although he did not secure a place this time, he chose to focus on the honour of having represented India in the past and remained respectful of the selectors’ decisions.
Siraj’s absence from the T20 squad was notable as the pace attack selected by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) included names like Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, but not him.
Despite his credentials in the format, the decision left some fans and commentators debating the selection balance. Nevertheless, Siraj refrained from expressing bitterness and instead shared an outlook that was both gracious and unifying.
Support for the Team and Leadership
While speaking to the media ahead of India’s third ODI against New Zealand, Siraj offered his backing to the side led by Suryakumar Yadav. Acknowledging the strength of the squad as chosen, he stated, “The team is quite good on paper and in form. My best wishes to them. Keep the trophy here,” showing confidence in his teammates’ abilities to succeed in the global event.
This endorsement was significant because it showed that, despite his personal setback, Siraj remains a team player and hopeful supporter of India’s chances.
Siraj’s comments also highlighted the respect he has for the sport and his teammates, indicating that he sees his role within Indian cricket as more than just selection for a single tournament.
Workload Management and Future Focus
Beyond addressing selection, Siraj also touched on the physical demands of modern cricket, particularly for fast bowlers who juggle multiple formats. He explained how the team management had managed his workload, noting that he was rested for certain matches to maintain optimum performance levels. Siraj emphasized that such strategic rest is crucial for “maintaining rhythm and focus,” especially for bowlers who play across Test, ODI and T20 formats.
By discussing this, he offered insight into the broader considerations behind team selection and player performance, suggesting that managing a long and demanding cricket calendar involves more than just picking the best names on form.
