‘MS Dhoni Is Playing My Father’s Role In My Cricket Life,’ Says Matheesha Pathirana

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) rising star Matheesha Pathirana expresses gratitude for the valuable lessons he learned from former captain and iconic wicketkeeper MS Dhoni during the Sri Lankan bowler’s stint with the Men in Yellow.

Pathirana highlighted Dhoni’s mentorship, describing how Dhoni mentored him like a father figure, offering invaluable pieces of advice that have bolstered his confidence. In an interview on the show ‘Lions Upclose’, Matheesha Pathirana shared his thoughts on MS Dhoni’s influence. He said:

“After my father, in my cricket life, mostly he (Dhoni) is playing my father’s role because he is always taking care of me, giving me advice, what I have to do, similar to my father when I am at home. He tells just small things, but it makes a lot of difference. So those little things, I take a lot of confidence.”

Arriving at CSK as a substitute for Sisanda Magala in IPL 2022, Pathirana became instrumental in their championship-winning campaign the following year, securing 19 wickets in 12 matches.

Matheesha Pathirana also discussed how MS Dhoni frequently emphasizes the importance of taking care of one’s body, balancing workload, and finding enjoyment in the game. He remains optimistic about Dhoni’s potential return for another season and also conveyed a request to the former CSK captain, stating:

“Off the field, we don’t talk that much; but if I have to ask something from him, definitely I would go to him and ask. Everytime he is telling me, ‘Enjoy your game and take care of your body,’ Mahi bhai, if you can play one more season, please play with us. If I’m here (laughs).”

Chennai Super Kings were without Matheesha Pathirana in their recent match against the Punjab Kings. However, they are optimistic that the Sri Lankan player will be back for the rematch in Dharamsala on Sunday.
