MS Dhoni is unarguably one of the greatest all-time batsmen in white-ball cricket. The legendary batsman accumulated more than 10,000 runs in his ODI career at an average of over 50. His former teammate Gautam Gambhir believes that Dhoni would have broken many records if he continued batting at number 3.

The former India skipper made the headlines when he made 148 and 183 against Pakistan and Sri Lanka respectively early on in his career. Once he became a senior pro he never batted at 3 and allowed to young guys to bat at the top order. After becoming the captain of India he developed himself as one of the greatest finishers in white-ball cricket.

Fans missed MS Dhoni batting at No.3 – Gautam Gambhir

Gambhir who has played a lot of cricket with Dhoni. Recently, he pointed out that he would have been the most exciting player if he batted at the number 3 spot. MS Dhoni usually came out to bat after the 30th over the mark at No. 5 or 6. The wicket-keeper batsman, who has an average of 82 batting at 3, after becoming skipper always aimed at finishing matches and remaining not out in the end.

“Probably world cricket has missed one thing that is MS (Dhoni) captained India and did not bat at No. 3. Had MS batted at No. 3, probably world cricket would have seen a completely different player”, Gautam Gambhir told Star Sports ‘Cricket Connected’.

“Probably he would have got many more runs, broken many records. Forget about records, they are meant to be broken. He would have been the most exciting cricketer in the world had he not captained India and had he batted at No. 3”.

“MS Dhoni batting at No. 3 on flat wickets with the quality of bowling attack now in world cricket… look at Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and West Indies in the current situation, with the quality there is in international cricket, MS Dhoni would have broken most of the records,” said Gautam Gambhir.

Meanwhile, speaking about the current scenario, MS Dhoni’s retirement speculation is the talk of the town. He has been out of action since the World Cup last year. He was mulling a return during the IPL but with the outbreak of COVID-19, BCCI had to postpone it.
