Team India pacers Mukesh Kumar and Arshdeep Singh led them to an emphatic win in the fifth T20I against Australia on Sunday, December 3 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. They defeated the visitors by six runs, defending 160. With this win, the hosts clinched the five-match series.

Batting first, Shreyas Iyer played a fine knock for Team India, ending as the top-scorer in the innings. He slammed 53 runs from 37 deliveries, from five four boundaries and two sixes. Jitesh Sharma and Axar Patel also contributed valuable runs in the innings. Jitesh scored 24 runs off 16 deliveries, while Axar smashed a 21-ball 31. Meanwhile, Ben Dwarshuish and Jason Behrendorff took two wickets each in the innings.

In response, Mukesh Kumar and Arshdeep Singh emerged as the star players for India. Australia seemed to be cruising to a win, on the back of Ben McDermott’s fifty. However, Arshdeep Singh sent him back for 54 runs, giving India a much-needed breakthrough. Mukesh Kumar’s double strike in the seventeenth over further helped India to get hold of the match. With 10 runs needed off the final over, Arshdeep conceded just three, powering India to a series win.

Mukesh Kumar took three wickets in the match at an economy rate of 8. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh picked up a couple of wickets each. Talking about the series performance, Ruturaj Gaikwad finished as the leading run-scorer with 223 runs, including a century.  Ravi Bishnoi was the leading wicket-taker with nine wickets.

A lot of learnings to take: Arshdeep Singh

Pacer Arshdeep Singh opened up on his performance in the fifth T20I against Australia. He had conceded 36 runs in the first three overs, however, his final over took India to victory. He thanked the team management for believing in his abilities during the deathovers. Speaking post-India’s win, Arshdeep Singh said,

I was thinking that I gave away too many runs (in the first three overs) and was hoping for another chance, and thanks to God, I defended it and also thanks to the staff that they believed in me.”

“According to the standards we have set as an Indian team, it was not near par (speaking about his performances in this series) but there are a lot of learnings to take and hoping to come back stronger,” he added.
