Probably one of the unsung heroes of the Indian bowling department of 2011 World Cup would be Munaf Patel. Ending up as the third highest wicket taker of the Indian side (11 wickets) his bowling action is mainly known for the deviation he makes after crossing the wicket.
The 35-year old has finally announced his retirement from all formats of the game with immediate effect. Munaf played his role alongside RP Singh and Irfan Pathan during the earlier decade and his spells were really a treat to watch. He now calls off his game with 125 international wickets to his bag.
Munaf made his debut as a reliable test bowler in the year 2006 against England at Mohali. It is to be noted that his impressive spells (a ten-wicket haul) against the same side in the practice game earned him a ticket at the earliest and he made sure to create an impact in the debut game ending up with a spell of 4/25 and played a vital role in India”s victory.
On his retirement note, Munaf mentioned that he isn”t feeling bad but content that he has lived his dream during his stay with the Indian team. Munaf before taking up cricket used to work in a tiles factory for a salary of 35 rupees for an eight-hour shift. His dedication and passion for the game have made him one of the finest medium pacers of his time. He last represented in blues against England in the ill-fated tour of 2011.
Speaking to the Indian express Munaf said, “Everyone’s time is up; there will be sadness only if others are playing and only I had quit!I still can’t believe I am quitting cricket as I don’t know anything else. I understand only cricket.There is no special reason, age ho chuka hai, fitness is not the same. Youngsters are there waiting for chances and it doesn’t look nice if I keep hanging on. The main thing is there is no motivation left. I was part of World Cup winning team in 2011; there can’t be a greater high than that. “
Munaf was an integral part of Rajasthan Royals in the cash-rich Indian Premier League. Taking 74 wickets in 63 games. He also enjoyed a smaller stint with Mumbai Indians.
