Murali Vijay decided to announce retirement from all forms of cricket after he did not get a chance in the Indian team. He was a stylish opener that played some fine innings for India on overseas conditions, especially in Australia and England.

Vijay made his Test debut on 6th November 2008 against Australia and played his final Test against Australia on 14th December 2018. He played in 61 Test matches (105 innings) scoring 3982 runs with 12 centuries and 15 half-centuries to his name including career-best innings of 167 against Australia in Hyderabad.

He has played some brilliant innings on overseas conditions as an opener on tough wickets including in Australia, England, and South Africa. Murali Vijay ended his Test career with 12 Test centuries which ended as the third most by an Indian opener. His performance stood out and helped Team India win matches.

Murali Vijay got rare opportunities in One-day international cricket with just 17 matches  ( 16 innings) and scored 339 runs with only 1 half-century. He registered his best ODI score of 72 against Zimbabwe in 2015. He played his last ODI against Zimbabwe on 14th July 2015 and did not feature after that for Men in Blue.

He got to play only 9 T20I matches for Team India with 169 runs including a career-best score of 48. Making his T20 debut against Afghanistan on May 1, 2010, Murali Vijay got to feature in just a handful of games. His last T20I fixture was on 19 July 2015.

“Today, with immense gratitude & humility, I announce my retirement from all forms of international cricket,” he said in a statement. “My journey from 2002-2018 has been the most wonderful years of my life for it was an honor representing India at the highest level of the sport.”

“I am grateful for the opportunities given to me by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), Chennai Super Kings, and Chemplast Sanmar.”

Murali Vijay played a total of 106 IPL matches with 2619 runs including 2 centuries and 13 half-centuries. He scored century against Rajasthan Royals in the 2010 edition and then during the 2012 edition against Delhi Daredevils.

He played for Tamil Nadu in Ranji Trophy and played 135 first-class matches scoring 9205 runs including 25 centuries and 38 half-centuries.
