In his chat with Virat Kohli, India’s new head coach Gautam Gambhir disclosed a startling reality. In contrast to popular belief, Gambhir had no desire to lead the Indian national squad. But due to unforeseen circumstances, he had to succeed Rahul Dravid, whose term came to an end following the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup.
Looking to a long term association, Gambhir was satisfied to be much part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the 2024 IPL in India. But in the end, he agreed to take up the job and there can be no doubt that he is a contender for a head coach in India’s coaching job.
Ever eager to join the Men in Blue he elucidated his reasons to Kohli of why he opted to join the four time world cup winning side. This is quite an unexpected event that means a new turn in the work of Gambhir as a coach. Everyone will be eagerly waiting to see how he copes up with the challenging arenas of international cricket as he enters this new phase.
This been due to Gambhir’s rise to the position of a head coach for India and his humble background, doors have been opened for a fresh new chapter in India cricket.
“It is an honor to come back to the team”- Gautam Gambhir
The Indian men’s cricket team’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, a former opening batsman for India, took over from Rahul Dravid in July. He has disclosed why he took up the position. The 42-year-old claims that until a few months ago, he had never given the coaching position any thought. However, the chance to represent India spurred him to accept the position.
“Never thought about it. In fact, never thought about coaching India, even a couple of months back. If you ask me why, I obviously think it’s an absolute honor to be representing your country once again. Coming back into the dressing room where you’ve spent a lot of time, where you’ve done some special things, and had great memories with all of you guys” Gautam Gambhir said.
“Looking forward to the kind of tours we’ve got—the Champions Trophy, the T20 World Cup, and the 50-over World Cup. Sometimes you want to challenge yourself and keep pushing forward, and that was one of the reasons why I thought, ‘Yes, I can contribute.’” Gambhir told Virat Kohli in a special interview.
“When you’ve got a younger family and you’re spending ten months on the road away from your two girls, it will always be challenging. But unless you have the support of your family, it’s difficult to take up these decisions,” he added.
