In a blow to their preparations, New Zealand cricket team have been forced to reshuffle their playing XI for the second Test against West Indies cricket team in Wellington. With regular wicketkeeper Tom Blundell ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury while batting in the first Test in Christchurch, the selectors have handed a Test debut to Mitchell Hay behind the stumps.
Hay’s introduction isn’t the only fresh change — due to a battery of injuries, New Zealand may well have another newcomer in the playing XI. The fast-bowling all-rounder Kristian Clarke or pace bowler Michael Rae are both in contention for a maiden Test appearance.
Meanwhile, captain Tom Latham urged the fresh faces not to feel overawed by the occasion — instead to rely on the form and confidence they’ve built in domestic cricket.
Injury Crisis: Strain on New Zealand’s Bowling and Keeping
New Zealand’s squad was already under strain following their drawn first Test, but the second Test will see even more disruption. Along with Blundell’s hamstring issue, pace bowlers Matt Henry and Nathan Smith — two key members of the attack — have been ruled out for the rest of the series, following a calf tear and a side-strain respectively.
Also sidelined due to injury is all-rounder Mitchell Santner, leaving New Zealand scrambling for replacements across both bowling and wicket-keeping departments.
As a consequence, New Zealand’s seam attack — already depleted during the first Test — will need a re-shuffle. The squad now potentially includes the uncapped pace duo (Clarke and Rae), alongside backup bowlers like Blair Tickner and existing seamer Jacob Duffy.
A Tough Test Ahead and West Indies’ Rising Confidence
The string of injuries comes at a precarious time: New Zealand’s attack was already stretched thin in Christchurch, where Duffy and part-time seamer Zak Foulkes alone were required to bowl a total of 76 overs in the final innings.
On the other side, West Indies head into Wellington on the back of momentum. In the first Test’s dramatic finish, their lower-order batters defied the odds — Justin Greaves smashed an unbeaten double century, while experienced campaigner Kemar Roach steadied the tail to secure a draw despite being set a daunting target of 531.
With New Zealand’s bowling options diminished and a pace-friendly pitch expected at the venue, the West Indies might see this as a golden chance to claim a long-awaited Test win in New Zealand.
