The talented Team India opener Prithvi Shaw gave his side a brisk start against New Zealand in the second Test at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Meanwhile, Shaw was under pressure coming into this game after perishing cheaply for 16 and 10 runs in the Wellington Test.

Shaw returned to the Test side after a long injury lay off and failed to showcase his skills. However, it was the manner in which he got out attracted severe criticisms. So much so, that there were speculations over his place in the second Test. To top that, Prithvi Shaw suffered an injury and was doubtful for the game. But he recovered on time and returned to training on the eve of the Test and returned with a bang.

India lost Mayank Agarwal early after Kane Williamson asked the visitors to bat on a greeny surface. However, it didn't deter the young batsman from Mumbai, who looked in his rhythm playing his aggressive game. He struck a few boundaries and soon raced to his fifty and in the process, bailed India out of danger alongside Cheteshwar Pujara.

Although Prithvi Shaw failed to convert the half-century into a big daddy hundred, he entered an elite list alongside Sachin Tendulkar. The 20-year-old Shaw became the second youngest Indian to slam a fifty in a Test in New Zealand after Tendulkar, who achieved the feat at the age of 16 years.

Here is the full list:

Sachin Tendulkar in 1990 – 16 years and 291 days
Prithvi Shaw in 2020 – 20 years and 112 days
Atul Wasan in 1990 – 21 years and 336 days
Brijesh Patel in 1976 – 23 years 81 days

Meanwhile, Prithvi Shaw's departure saw New Zealand utilise the momentum picking two more crucial wickets removing Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to take a firm grip on the game. Struggling at 113 for four, Cheteshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari stitched a much-needed partnership to steady the innings before Vihari departed after a well made fifty at the stroke of tea.
