
India’s T20 World Cup–winning captain Suryakumar Yadav said that his next big goal is to win a gold medal at the 2028 Olympics. Talking about India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, the 35-year-old said that winning the tournament was a very special moment for him and the team.
India national cricket team defeated New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in a one-sided final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8. Batting first, India scored a huge 255 runs for 5 wickets. While chasing the target, New Zealand never looked comfortable and were all out for 159 runs in 19 overs.
After the match, Suryakumar spoke at the press conference about the historic win and also talked about his future plans. He said that after winning the World Cup, he now wants to focus on achieving bigger goals.
“Obviously it has been a wonderful journey in the last one month, though it didn’t start the way we wanted it to start, but then it’s part of the sport. Throughout the journey till today it has been very special and collectively as a team what we have achieved I think is right in front of you. So, very happy with that and the next goal is the Olympic gold and also the team that we work with.”
In the 2028 Summer Olympics, six teams each in the men’s and women’s categories will take part in the cricket tournament. Cricket will return to the Olympics for the first time since the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris. India national cricket team are expected to qualify from Asia based on their International Cricket Council (ICC) T20I rankings.
“We Played a Different Brand of Cricket in 2024”: Suryakumar Yadav on Rohit Sharma’s Influence
While praising the current Indian team, Suryakumar Yadav also gave credit to former captain Rohit Sharma for changing the team’s playing style. The right-handed batter said that Indian cricket saw a big change in 2024, when the team went on to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Suryakumar said that from that moment, the team started playing a different and more confident brand of cricket. He added:
“We played different kind of cricket in 2024 and from there we understood how this team needs to work forward, and it’s been a wonderful journey since then. We won an ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, played a completely different kind of cricket and now in 2026, we wanted to do something special in front of the home crowd. So we want to continue doing that in 2027, 2028, 2029 and never stop.”
Opener Sanju Samson kept up his excellent form in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scoring a quick 89 runs from 46 balls in the final on Sunday. With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a superb performance, taking 4 wickets for 15 runs, while Axar Patel also bowled well and claimed 3 wickets for 27 runs.
