The Indian Women’s team has improved leaps and bounds in the last few years. India Women’s ODI skipper Mithali Raj has played a critical role in taking Women’s cricket forward. She led India in the finals of the 2005 and 2017 Women’s World Cup. India suffered a heartbreaking loss at the home of Cricket Lord’s in 2017 final as they lost to the hosts England by just 9 runs.

Skipper Mithali Raj now wants to add the elusive World Cup trophy in her cabinet before hanging her boots. The right-hand batsman has several batting records to her name and is still hoping to win the World Cup. India who came close in the T20 World Cup earlier this year in Australia now can beat any team on their day.

Raj has said that winning against good teams regularly has helped the Women’s side gain a solid reputation in recent times. She also added that now teams don’t take India lightly anymore.

“Teams don’t take us lightly anymore and come prepared for us. Consistently beating the best sides in the World be it Australia in the ODIs or England in T20s has given us confidence that we too are a side to beat”, Raj was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

“Access to gyms is restricted and play has been put on hold. So the 2021 World Cup is pretty much open and there are no favourites,” she added.

Mithali Raj, who has already taken retirement from T20 cricket is aiming to win the 50 overs World Cup. She took retirement from the shortest format of the game to prolong her ODI career. Mithali recently revealed that she is working extremely hard on her fitness during the lockdown and also said that the coach WV Raman is trying to be creative for the team’s skill training regimen.

“Fitness at my age is something I need to be consciously and constantly keep up. I know I can’t forget my skill. I still have batting and me and I might need to few sessions to get my rhythm going.

Some of us have running space while others like me have to manage within the restricted spaces indoors, so our trainers are adapting routines for us. WV Raman (coach) is trying to be creative with our skill training regimen”, Raj concluded.
