Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott stated that stepping away from his role was not his decision, following the team’s final T20 World Cup 2026 group-stage match against Canada on February 19. The former England batter’s stint as Afghanistan’s head coach has concluded during the ongoing tournament.
Afghanistan bowed out in the first round after defeats to New Zealand and South Africa. Trott had taken charge in July 2022, and under his guidance, the team delivered several strong performances, particularly in ICC events.
However, after his last game in charge, Trott clarified that the call to part ways was not made by him, as quoted by Cricbuzz:
“With continuing, it’s not my decision. So that’s all, I’ll leave it at really. Maybe the time’s right, maybe it’s not. I don’t know, but I wish everyone the best in the future.”
Afghanistan’s standout achievement under Jonathan Trott was their run to the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. The Asian team also secured a sixth-place finish in the 10-team 2023 ODI World Cup, highlighted by impressive victories over England and Pakistan.
“Always Want to See England Do Well” – Jonathan Trott On His Future Coaching Plans
Jonathan Trott shared that he hopes to coach the England team one day, having played for the side for six years during his career. The former right-handed batter was a mainstay of England’s Test lineup, amassing nearly 4,000 runs at an average of over 44 across 52 matches.
“I am very proud of the way I played my career, and always like to see the England side do well. I’d love to one day, hopefully, have the opportunity to coach a team that you hold so dear to your heart. There are a lot of people that I’m sure would love to do that job.”
“So yeah, we’ll have to see. But I just want to enjoy my coaching. And, you know, I’ve certainly enjoyed the last couple of years here,” said Trott (via ESPN Cricinfo).
