Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) prevailed in the Southern Derby, beating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 13 runs at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Bangalore bowlers stepped up to the task to defend 174 runs and secure a much-needed win to keep their hopes alive of making it to the playoffs.

Chasing a mammoth total, the defending champion got a good foundation with in-form Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway adding 51 runs for the first wicket. Just when it looked like the CSK openers are will stage another record partnership, Shahbaz Ahmed provided the first breakthrough.

In the following over, Robin Uthappa too was sent back to the pavilion by Glenn Maxwell for one run. However, it didn’t dent Conway’s confidence as he brought his second consecutive fifty. But RCB managed to stage a comeback dismissing Ambati Rayudu and Conway in quick succession to have the Chennai franchise at 109/4.

However, it was all Royal Challengers Bangalore since then, chipping in with wickets at regular intervals. Harshal Patel and Josh Hazelwood did a spectacular job to keep MS Dhoni at bay and secure a much-needed victory.

Meanwhile, the fans were elated to see Bangalore finish on top and improve their record against Chennai Super Kings. On the other hand, the defending champions crash out of IPL 2022 alongside Mumbai Indians.

Mahipal Lomror’s quickfire cameo propel RCB to 174 runs

Asked to bat first, Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli started off well with the 50 up in five overs, but the introduction of spin pulled things back. Faf holed out and then Kohli had a nightmarish couple of minutes when he ran Glenn Maxwell out who had come in at No.3 to counterattack the spinners.

In the next over, the former RCB captain got bowled through the gate by Moeen Ali. It left Rajat Patidar and Mahipal Lomror to rebuild and CSK’s spinners ran through their overs for not much. But Lomror played a fine knock and Dinesh Karthik at the end added the finishing touches.

RCB scored 50 off the last five overs and 74 off the last seven overs despite Maheesh Theekshana’s outstanding in the 19th over, taking three wickets and giving away two runs.
