“Open 24 Hours”: How Dhoni Turned His Room Into CSK’s Team Hub

Former Chennai Super Kings batter Michael Hussey has shed fresh light on MS Dhoni’s unique approach to team bonding, explaining how the CSK captain’s room often became the heart of off-field interactions. Hussey revealed that Dhoni never restricted access, following an “open-door policy” where any player—senior or junior—could walk in to relax, talk cricket, or simply unwind.

As Hussey described it, “Dhoni is just the most amazing guy, his room is available open 24 hours a day. So, anyone can go up there, and just sit.”

According to him, Dhoni’s spacious room essentially turned into an informal lounge where conversations flowed naturally, helping reduce stress during the long IPL season. Players would gather after matches, bring food, and spend hours discussing the game or sharing laughs.

Hussey recalled, “He has got his lounge room, players just sit around, they start talking cricket… they bring food up, it is fantastic.”

Shisha Sessions: A Relaxed Social Ritual

One particular aspect of these gatherings that caught the attention of fans was Hussey’s mention of players using shisha, or flavored tobacco, during these meetups. He noted, “Some of them like the ‘shisha’, you know the flavored tobacco stuff. So, that is their way of socializing.”

While such details often circulate with speculation, Hussey emphasized that it was simply a casual part of the bonding experience—not something exclusive or unusual within the group.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first account of Dhoni’s room being a hub of relaxed hookah or shisha sessions. Former CSK star George Bailey had earlier commented on the same environment, saying, “He likes smoking a bit of the shisha or the hookah. So, he quite often would set that up in his room, and it was very much open-door policy.”

Bailey pointed out that a lot of young players gravitated to Dhoni’s room because it felt safe, welcoming, and free of hierarchy, which made socializing easy and natural.

Breaking Hierarchy and Building a Connected Team

Both Hussey and Bailey highlighted that Dhoni’s informal interactions contributed significantly to CSK’s reputation as one of the most tight-knit IPL teams. Bailey specifically mentioned how Dhoni’s approach softened the power gaps usually seen in Indian and international teams: “For India or a lot of other cricket teams, it can be hierarchical, but he certainly broke that down.”

This relaxed environment, centered around open conversations, food, and occasional shisha sessions, played a key role in shaping team chemistry. Over the years, players from around the world have consistently praised Dhoni’s leadership style—calm, inclusive, and deeply human.

These behind-the-scenes glimpses once again reinforce why so many cricketers credit CSK’s family-like culture to Dhoni’s personality and his ability to bring people together beyond the boundary rope.
