Shubman Gill’s Fitness in Doubt As Selectors Meet To Pick For Players T20I Squad

As India prepares to finalise its squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa starting December 9, all eyes are on vice-captain Shubman Gill’s fitness status. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is meeting in Raipur with Gill’s availability being one of the most crucial discussion points.

Gill sustained a neck injury during the Kolkata Test against South Africa, where he was forced to retire hurt after scoring just four runs. Following the incident, he immediately underwent medical checks in Mumbai under spine specialist Dr. Abhay Nene before heading back to Chandigarh for rest and early recovery.

The young batter has now moved to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where he is continuing his rehabilitation. According to sources, Gill’s chances of taking part in the T20I series remain “50-50,” and no final call has been taken yet.

Possible Replacements and Opening Options

The selectors are likely to wait for a final medical update, but Gill may attempt a batting session to gauge his condition before they make their decision. If he fails to recover in time, the team management will have to revisit their opening plans.

In such a case, the two strongest contenders expected to step in are Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Both players are seen as capable partners to join the in-form Abhishek Sharma, who has been performing aggressively at the top of the order.

Samson’s experience and versatility could work in his favour, while Jaiswal’s recent explosive form in white-ball cricket makes him a natural fit for the opening slot. The final choice will depend on the team balance the selectors wish to create heading into the series.

Hardik Pandya’s Return Likely to Boost Squad

Another major talking point for the selection committee is the potential return of Hardik Pandya to India’s T20I setup. The all-rounder has recently resumed competitive cricket for his state side and reportedly looked convincing in his comeback performance.

His return would inject both stability and power into the middle order while also strengthening India’s pace-bowling options. With the T20 World Cup getting closer, the selectors are expected to track Hardik’s workload and rhythm closely.

Overall, the meeting in Raipur will revolve around two key questions: Gill’s readiness and the composition of the opening pair. The final squad will reflect a balance between immediate needs and long-term planning as India prepares for a challenging South Africa series.
