Padma Shri Honour For Team India’s World Cup-Winning Captains

Team India’s World Cup-winning captains, Harmanpreet Kaur and Rohit Sharma, will be honoured with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, on Republic Day. The Padma awards are presented in three categories — Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

Rohit Sharma, regarded as one of India’s finest leaders, ended the national team’s 13-year ICC trophy drought in 2024 by guiding the Men in Blue to their second T20 World Cup title. Led by the 38-year-old, India edged past South Africa by seven runs in a nail-biting final at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Although Rohit narrowly missed out on lifting the ODI World Cup after finishing runners-up in 2023, his leadership in the shortest format proved decisive. On the other hand, Harmanpreet Kaur etched her name in history by becoming the first Indian women’s captain to win a World Cup in any format.

The Women in Blue produced a remarkable turnaround in the final against South Africa to clinch the World Cup in 2025. During the competition, Kaur’s side also registered the highest successful run chase in women’s 50-over cricket, hunting down 339 against Australia in the semi-final.

India Men Eye Historic Feat At T20 World Cup 2026

India, who are co-hosting the T20 World Cup alongside Sri Lanka, will enter the tournament as strong favourites to claim the title. The reigning champions will look to create history by becoming the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times and the first to successfully defend the crown.

Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, the Asian powerhouse has been in superb form in T20Is, winning eight consecutive bilateral series and remaining unbeaten since the last T20 World Cup. The title holders will begin their campaign against the USA on February 7 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
