Pakistan entered the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as the defending champions, holding hopes of a glorious campaign on home soil. However, the Mohammad Rizwan-led squad failed spectacularly, exiting without a single victory—a first for any host nation in the tournament’s history.
Pakistan vs. New Zealand: A Dismal Start
Pakistan’s campaign began with a shocking 60-run defeat against New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi. Batting first, the Kiwis set a challenging target, exposing Pakistan’s weak bowling attack. In response, Pakistan crumbled under pressure, failing to build any momentum.
Pakistan vs. India: A Crushing Defeat
Facing arch-rivals India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Pakistan aimed for redemption. They set a target of 242 runs, but India’s well-executed chase saw them securing victory in just 42.3 overs, exposing Pakistan’s ineffective bowling and lackluster fielding.
Pakistan vs. Bangladesh: The Last Hope Dashed
In their final group-stage match against Bangladesh at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Pakistan hoped for a consolation win. However, rain played spoilsport, washing out the match and sealing their winless exit.
This marks the first time a host nation has exited the ICC Champions Trophy without a single win. While Kenya also failed to win any matches in 2000, they had only played in the playoff stage before the main tournament began.
Why Pakistan Failed?
Pakistan’s failure can be attributed to several factors, including tactical errors such as poor team selections and questionable strategies, underwhelming performances from key players who failed to step up in crucial moments, and a lack of vision and adaptability in coaching decisions and leadership.
Performance of host nation in Champions Trophy
Historically, only one host nation, Sri Lanka in 2002, has managed to win the Champions Trophy title. Pakistan, entering the tournament as defending champions, saw their title defense crumble within six days following consecutive defeats.
Notably, only one team has successfully defended its Champions Trophy title. Under Ricky Ponting’s leadership, Australia clinched their first Champions Trophy in 2006 and went on to defend it three years later, triumphing over New Zealand in the 2009 final at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
| YEAR | HOST NATION | FINAL RESULT OF HOST NATION |
| 1998 | Bangladesh | Not Qualified |
| 2000 | Kenya | Playoff Stage (0/1) |
| 2002 | Sri Lanka | Champions (Shared with India) |
| 2004 | England | Finalists |
| 2006 | India | Group Stage (1/3) |
| 2009 | South Africa | Group Stage (1/3) |
| 2013 | England & Wales | Finalists |
| 2017 | England & Wales | Semifinalists |
| 2025 | Pakistan & UAE | Group Stage (0/3) |

With Pakistan out, Group A sees India and New Zealand advancing to the semifinals. India plays in Dubai on March 2, while New Zealand competes at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on March 3. The final showdown is set for March 9.
