South Africa secured a historic victory against Australia in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s, winning by five wickets. The highlight of the match was Aiden Markram’s stunning 136-run innings during the fourth-innings chase of 282, helping him recover from a first-innings failure where he was dismissed for a duck.

Skipper Temba Bavuma showed great courage by scoring 66 runs while dealing with a hamstring injury. Their efforts ensured that South Africa remained dominant throughout the final stages of the game. Pat Cummins praised their performance, saying, “Aiden and Temba didn’t give us a chance. And South Africa showed why they’re here and are deserved winners, they kept themselves in the game throughout.”

Australia’s Missed Opportunities

Australia had a decent start and even secured a first-innings lead, but couldn’t maintain their control over the match. Pat Cummins admitted, “Things can change quickly in cricket, but it was a bridge too far. There were a few things that we didn’t do right. We didn’t bat out the opposition after a decent first-innings lead.”

Australia’s batting collapse in the second innings, where they were reduced to 73/7, raised concerns about their top-order stability. Although Alex Carey (43) and Mitchell Starc (58) added some crucial runs to set a competitive target, South Africa chased it down with determination.

Reflecting on the final day, Cummins said the Proteas, who started the day at 213/2 with Markram on 102 and Bavuma on 65, were simply too solid to break down. Even though both batters didn’t last long into the day, their overnight effort had already taken South Africa close to the title.

Cummins on Team Performance and the Bigger Picture

Pat Cummins acknowledged issues with Australia’s top seven, saying, “There are concerns in the top-seven.” However, he also defended his team’s overall efforts over the past two years. “Our guys have performed well in the last two years. Bowlers did well in the first two days. We gave everything a chance, Lyon bowled particularly well but didn’t get a wicket,” he said. While the defeat was disappointing,

Cummins highlighted the value of reaching the final, calling it a major achievement. “This is the pinnacle, I love Test cricket. Huge achievement to make the final, one-game shootout is a spectacle, didn’t end up on the right side but it’s been a great week.”
