Australian batter Peter Handscomb will be praying that he recovers in time for the four-match away Test series against India, which begins on February 9. Handscomb has a fitness task ahead of him because he is currently nursing a hip injury that was confirmed by scans on Friday.

The Australian middle-order sensation was injured earlier this week while attempting to play a pull shot at a cricket club in Victoria. He didn’t feel the pain right away and kept batting, but after three deliveries, the 31-year-old collapsed in agony after attempting yet another pull shot.

Handscomb was forced to leave the field immediately for medical treatment, and scans revealed that the batter had suffered soft-tissue damage in his right hip.

“Scans have since confirmed soft-tissue damage in his right hip,” Cricket Australia said in a statement. “Officials are confident Handscomb will be fit to leave with the Australian team later this month for the Qantas tour of India.”

Handscomb has not played a Test match for Australia since 2019 and will be hoping to reclaim his red-ball spot during the upcoming India tour. During Australia’s previous visit to the country in the 2016/17 season, he was a member of the playing XI.

Meanwhile, with less than a month until the crucial India tour, some injury concerns for their key players have put the Australian camp in a bind. Apart from Handscomb, paceman Mitchell Starc and emerging all-rounder Cameron Green are both nursing finger injuries.

The veteran will miss the first game of the series in Nagpur but will join the Australian squad for the rest of the tour. Australia took the first blood with a 333-run victory on a dustbowl in Pune. Nonetheless, they lost the plot from a strong position and were outplayed by India in Bengaluru and Dharamsala, allowing India to win the series 1-2.
