Before the ICC World Cup League 2 clash between Namibia and Scotland at Maple Leaf North-West Ground in King City, Ontario, ground staff took the unusual step of setting the pitch on fire following rain. Videos of the incident circulated on social media, but despite these efforts, the match was ultimately abandoned.
The game had already faced delays due to rain, with several pitch inspections conducted and the latest possible start time set for 9:02 PM. Shortly after, Cricket Scotland’s official X account shared images showing the ground staff using fire in an attempt to dry the wicket. Despite these measures, the match could not proceed.

Their previous matches produced contrasting results; Namibia secured a five-wicket win over Canada, whereas Scotland fell short against the Netherlands, losing by four wickets despite posting a total of 369. The Dutch successfully chased the target with just four balls remaining.
Namibia Tops While Scotland Struggles On Points Table
Both teams also currently occupy opposite ends of the ICC World Cup League 2 points table. Despite suffering a narrow defeat to the Netherlands, Scotland, captained by Matthew Cross, firmly sits third with 11 wins and seven losses in 21 matches, which also notably include three no-result games.
Namibia, meanwhile, is struggling at sixth place with just eight wins from 22 matches alongside 13 losses. The United States tops the standings, having won 14 of their 20 games. Scotland and Namibia are both scheduled to play Canada next, on August 31 and September 2, respectively.
Even though Namibia is a co-host for the 2027 World Cup, they are not guaranteed a spot in the tournament. Both teams will aim to improve their chances of qualifying, with Namibia last appearing in a 50-over World Cup in 2003 and Scotland in 2015.
