Prithvi Shaw recently shared a memorable incident involving a prank by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Chandrakant Pandit that brought him to tears. The event took place during a domestic match in 2017 when Pandit was coaching the Mumbai team.
Shaw recalled being scolded by the veteran coach after speaking briefly with Rohit Sharma near the boundary while carrying drinks. Upon returning to the pavilion, Pandit questioned Shaw about the conversation. When Shaw couldn’t remember the details, the coach told him to go back and ask Sharma again.
After the match, Pandit pranked Prithvi Shaw by asking him to go home, even booking a ticket. An emotional Shaw broke down in tears, only to learn just before leaving that it was all a joke. Sharing details of the amusing incident, Shaw recounted the moment during an interview with News24 Sports (starting at 35:56):
“Chandu sir had pranked me once. Although it seemed very real to me. I was playing One-Days for Mumbai in 2017. Rohit Sharma had come to play the last two matches, so I had to sit outside. Everyone knows how strict Chandu sir is. I was carrying drinks near the boundary.”
“I had seen Rohit bhai for the first time. He was at thirdman, and I stood near him for a long time and was talking to him. When I came back to the dressing room, sir asked me what I spoke to Rohit bhai. I told him that I didn’t remember. He then asked me to go to the field again and ask what we had spoken about.”
Prithvi Shaw likely to leave Mumbai ahead of 2025–26 domestic season
Prithvi Shaw, who debuted for Mumbai in 2017, is now expected to switch teams for the upcoming domestic season. Reports suggest that the Mumbai Cricket Association has issued him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to represent another state side.
Shaw last featured for Mumbai in the 2024–25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he was the team’s third-highest scorer with 197 runs in nine innings, contributing to their title win under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy. However, He was later dropped from Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare and Ranji Trophy squads due to fitness and weight concerns.
