Prithvi Shaw scores double century in Royal ODI CUp 2023

The explosive opener Prithvi Shaw was in sensational touch for Northamptonshire against Somerset played at County Ground, Northampton on 9th August 2023. Northamptonshire captain Lewis McManus won the toss and decided to bat first. Shaw opened the innings putting enough pressure on opponent bowlers right from the word go. He completed his maiden fifty for the county side off 44 deliveries that included 8 fours and 1 six.

After completing his fifty, Shaw looked in sublime touch smashing Somerset bowlers all over the park. He then displayed attacking stroke play and completed his century off 81 deliveries with 14 fours and 2 sixes. His batting looked in completely destroying mood hitting boundaries and sixes at will keeping the pressure on Somerset.

Prithvi Shaw was eventually dismissed for a brilliant 244 off 153 deliveries with 28 fours and 11 sixes at a strike rate of 159.47. Thanks to a superb knock, Northamptonshire to a massive 415 for 8. He kept hitting shots with ease not allowing the Somerset bowlers to settle completing a double century off 129 deliveries including 24 boundaries and 8 sixes. Shaw made batting look easy hitting big strokes and did not look threatened by opponent bowlers.

Shaw continued to demonstrate big hitting and allowed Northamptonshire to pile on runs keeping the pressure on Somerset bowlers. Shaw became the first Indian to score a double century in the Royal ODI Cup. He went past Cheteshwar Pujara’s 174 and became the second Indian to hit multiple List-A double tons. Playing for Mumbai, Prithvi Shaw smashed 227 during the 2020-21 Vijay Hazare Trophy match.

  1. Prithvi Shaw went past Saif Zaib’s record of 136, the highest induvial scorer for Northamptonshire batter in the ODI Cup.
  2. He became the 2nd Indian after Rohit Sharma and fourth overall to hit multiple List A double centuries. Rohit Sharma has scored 3 while Ali Brown and Travis Head completed 2 each.
  3. Shaw broke the record of Kent’s Ollie Robinson and Ali Or from Sussex scoring 206 runs each during the 2022 edition.
  4. He surpassed Sourav Ganguly’s highest score by an Indian in List A score on England soil. Ganguly made 183 against Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup.

Shaw’s performance in the 2023 Royal ODI Cup

Prithvi Shaw played his third match in this tournament. He made 34 off 35 deliveries against Gloucestershire and then made a quickfire 26 off 17 balls against Sussex. Shaw would be looking to perform well in the upcoming matches and stake a claim in the Indian squad again.
