Women’s cricket in Qatar got a massive boost with the introduction of their first-ever T20 Women’s tournament. Qatar Cricket Association’s President Sheikh ABDULAZIZ BIN SAOUD AL THANI, and board members hosted the tournament to empower Women’s cricket in Qatar. Al Sadd Strikers won the first-ever edition of the tournament on October 8, 2022.

The Qatar Cricket Association launched the domestic T20 league named, “Qatar Professional League (QPL) – QCA’s Women’s T20 League”. The league kicked off on September 9. It featured eight teams, divided into two different groups, with each team consisting of 16 players. Group 1 featured Al Bidda Knights, Al Saad Strikers, Lusail Lioness, and Wakra Challengers. While, Doha Rangers, Al Khor Avengers, Salwa Supernovas, and Abu Hamour Hurricanes formed the second group.

The Al Sadd Strikers defeated the Al Bida Knights in the finals by eight wickets. Bowling first, they bowled out Al Bida Knights for 61 runs. Nilu Mendis led the bowling charts with three wickets in four overs, conceding eight runs. In response, the Al Sadd Strikers chased down the target comfortably to clinch the title.

Players were given the freedom to express and showcase their talent: Christopher Raja, Director of QCA’s Women’s T20 League.

Christopher Raja, the Director of the QCA Women’s T20 League, expressed that the tournament gave the players the freedom to showcase their talent. He added that the teams were given the opportunity to choose their coaches and team managers.

“This tournament was one of a kind where the teams were given the opportunity to choose their coaches and team managers. The players were given the freedom to express and showcase their talent which they are best at which made them bond and work as a unit.” said the tournament director Christopher Raja as quoted by Female cricket.
