Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on the controversial substitution of Harshit Rana for Shivam Dube in the Pune T20I on January 31. The veteran off-spinner criticized the match officials for allowing the move, calling it a “pure cricketing miscalculation.” The decision has sparked debate, with many questioning whether it adhered to the ICC’s ‘like-for-like’ substitution rule.
What Happened?
During the final over of the Indian innings, Shivam Dube was struck on the head, leading to Harshit Rana being brought in as a concussion substitute. However, Rana, a pacer, replaced Dube, an all-rounder, raising concerns over the legitimacy of the move.
Ashwin’s Take on the Controversy
Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, drew parallels to past instances of concussion substitutions, particularly the 2020 case where Yuzvendra Chahal replaced an injured Ravindra Jadeja. However, he noted that Chahal-for-Jadeja was at least a ‘like-for-like’ switch, unlike Rana-for-Dube.
“The game is done. India capture yet another series at home. T20I has been a real juggernaut of a win. What was this game? It was like a replica of the IPL. Supersub was there, and the game was played with an impact player,” said Ashwin.
Ashwin pointed out that in the past, teams adhered more closely to the rules governing concussion substitutes, citing the 2020 Canberra T20I where Jadeja was replaced by Chahal, a spinner for a spinner, whereas in the Harshit-Dube incident, Dube, an all-rounder, was replaced by Harshit, a frontline pacer, making it a questionable swap.
“The entire discussion is about how Harshit Rana came in as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube. Did we forget that it was an international match and play an IPL match? I can understand. It has happened in the past. Ravindra Jadeja got concussed in Canberra, and Yuzvendra Chahal came in as a substitute. I don’t understand this. At least previously, Chahal came in for Jadeja, a spinner for a spinner,” he added.
Criticism of Match Officials
Ashwin emphasized that the decision should have undergone stricter scrutiny, stating that the match referees and umpires should have ensured a fair substitution. He believed Ramandeep Singh, a closer like-for-like replacement, should have been the substitute.
“Here, Harshit came in for Shivam Dube. There is no role of the Indian or England team. If there is no one in the squad, then you can say that Harshit Rana can bat a bit and Shivam Dube can bowl a bit. That’s why we brought him in. Like-for-like replacement Ramandeep Singh was sitting outside. I don’t understand. This is a case of pure cricketing miscalculation, either on the part of the umpires or the part of the match referee. Ramandeep Singh was there, like-for-like for Shivam Dube. But not him. Harshit Rana was chosen as the concussion substitute. I think people in charge should look into this,” said Ashwin.
Despite the controversy, Harshit Rana played a pivotal role in India’s victory. He took a crucial catch to dismiss Jos Buttler and delivered an impressive spell of 4-0-33-3.
