Rajat Patidar made a thundering start to the new domestic season, announcing his return in style with a blistering century in the Duleep Trophy. Leading the Central Zone in the absence of regular skipper Dhruv Jurel, the Madhya Pradesh batter smashed an outstanding 125 runs off just 96 deliveries against the North East Zone.
His innings came when the score was 148/1 after opener Aryan Juyal had to walk off, retired hurt. From that point, Patidar completely took charge, dominating the opposition bowlers with his stroke play and sharp intent. His aggressive approach set the tone for Central Zone, leaving North East Zone struggling to find answers.
Partnership with Malewar and Boundary-Filled Innings
Patidar’s brilliance was amplified by the formidable 199-run stand he put together with Vidarbha batter Danish Malewar. The duo stitched together a partnership that changed the complexion of the innings, with both players complementing each other perfectly. Patidar, however, was the central attraction of the day.
During his fiery stay at the crease, he struck 21 fours and cleared the ropes three times, accumulating an astonishing 102 runs in boundaries alone. His aggressive yet calculated knock not only pushed Central Zone into a strong position but also reminded fans and selectors of his ability to dominate red-ball cricket with attacking flair.
Eyeing a National Comeback
Patidar’s timely century could not have come at a better moment, as he looks to revive his Test career ahead of India’s home season. Having represented India in three Tests against England earlier in 2024, he is determined to regain his spot in the squad. His recent red-ball record has been impressive, with 623 runs in his last 11 innings at an average of 56.63.
That purple patch includes two hundreds and two fifties, underlining his consistency and temperament in longer formats. Across his first-class career, Patidar averages just over 43 and is nearing the 5,000-run landmark—a testament to his sustained impact in domestic cricket. With such numbers, his Duleep Trophy heroics could well serve as the springboard for a national recall, especially with India seeking dependable middle-order options.
Patidar’s explosive start has not only boosted Central Zone’s campaign but also reignited conversations about his international prospects. If he continues in this vein, the coming season may very well mark his return to the Test arena.
