Railways recorded the highest-ever run chase in Ranji Trophy history. They achieved this remarkable feat against Tripura in the final group game played at Agartala on 19th February 2024.

Starting the final day on 270 for 4, Railways opener Pratham Singh had great batting skills putting pressure on Tripura bowlers. He began the day on 113 not out and batted with lots of attacking shots and then did not allow them to settle. Arindam Ghosh was dismissed for well made 40 keeping the scoreboard ticking. Upendra Yadav looked impressive taking singles and hitting boundaries at will.

It was a disastrous start to the run chase for Railways as Suraj Ahuja, Yuvraj Singh, and Sahab Yuvraj Singh went cheaply leaving in some trouble. Pratham Singh and Mohammad Saif showed great batting display keeping the pressure on Tripura bowlers. Both Railways batters kept hitting boundaries at will.

Mohammad Saif was eventually dismissed for 106. Saif and Pratham Singh added 175 runs for the 4th wicket. Arindam Ghosh looked impressive keeping the momentum going for Railways along with Pratham Singh. Railways ended third on 270 for 4.

Pratham Singh made sure that Railways were on course for a famous victory. Ghosh and Singh added 118 runs for the 5th wicket. Upendra Yadav and Pratham helped Railways win the match by 5 wickets. Pratham Singh remained not out on 169 off 300 deliveries with 16 fours and 1 six that helped Railways end the season on a winning note. For his 20 and 169 not out, Pratham Singh was named player of the match award.

The first innings saw Tripura being bundled out for 149 runs in the first innings. In reply, Railways could only muster 105 as Tripura took a lead of 44 runs. Tripura showed great batting display in the second innings posting 333 setting Railways target of 378.

Saurashtra Held The Previous Record

Before this match, Saurashtra held the previous record for the highest run chase in Ranji Trophy history. It was a brilliant performance by Saurashtra as they chased down 372 in the 2nd quarterfinals against Uttar Pradesh on 15th January onwards 2019.

Harvik Desai was the top scorer with 116 Pujara’s unbeaten 67 along with Sheldon Jackson’s 73 ensured that Saurashtra chased down this massive target.
