Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan has etched his name in history as the highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket. On Tuesday, the 26-year-old leg-spinner surpassed Dwayne Bravo‘s previous record of 631 wickets after dismissing Dunith Wellalage during the SA20 Qualifier 1 against Paarl Royals. This milestone solidifies Rashid’s reputation as one of the most influential bowlers in the T20 format.
A Proud Achievement for Rashid
After his team secured victory, Rashid reflected on his remarkable accomplishment.
“It’s a great achievement,” he said. “I never thought about it, and if you’d asked me 10 years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it. It’s a proud feeling to be from Afghanistan and reach the top.”
He also praised Dwayne Bravo, acknowledging him as one of the best T20 bowlers and expressing his gratitude for the honor of surpassing him. Rashid is determined to continue his journey at the top.
A Dominant Force in Global Leagues
Rashid made his T20 debut in 2015 as a teenager and has since established himself as a formidable force across various leagues worldwide. With nearly 500 matches to his name, his career spans prestigious tournaments like the IPL, PSL, CPL, BPL, and The Hundred. Known for his quick deliveries and deceptive spin, Rashid’s unique ability to keep batters guessing has made him a key figure in every tournament he’s part of.
In addition to his bowling prowess, Rashid has evolved into an explosive all-rounder. His ability to hit big sixes, particularly with his signature “snake shot,” has made him a potent lower-order batter. His all-around brilliance was evident during the IPL 2018 playoffs when he scored 34 off 10 balls and later defended the total with a match-winning 3 for 19.
Recognizing his value, Gujarat Titans retained him for INR 15 crore (USD 1.8 million approx). Following the SA20, Rashid will represent Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy before returning to the IPL with Gujarat Titans.
