Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has been honoured in his hometown of Chennai, as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has approved the renaming of Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street in West Mambalam after him. This decision was initiated by Carrom Ball Event and Marketing Company Private Limited, a firm owned by Ashwin, which initially proposed renaming either Arya Gowda Road or his residential street.

After evaluation, the authorities finalized Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street for the honour. The renaming ceremony is expected to take place soon, making Ashwin one of the few Indian cricketers to receive such recognition. Tamil Nadu journalists confirmed the update on social media, with one journalist humorously noting that Ashwin can now step out of his house and proudly claim ownership of the street named after him.

Ashwin Returns to Chennai Super Kings After a Decade

In addition to the street renaming, Ashwin has also made headlines with his return to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after a ten-year gap. The off-spinner was reacquired by the franchise for ₹9.75 crore in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. Ashwin, who began his IPL career with CSK in 2009, played for the team until 2015 before moving to franchises like Rising Pune Super Giants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.

With 120 wickets for CSK, he ranks third in the franchise’s all-time wicket-takers list, behind Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo. Over his IPL career, Ashwin has taken 180 wickets in 212 matches at an economy rate of 7.12, making him a valuable addition to CSK’s bowling attack once again.

Ashwin to Make CSK Comeback on March 23

Ashwin is set to make his return for CSK in their opening IPL 2025 match against Mumbai Indians on March 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. During his previous tenure with the franchise, he played 97 matches and claimed 90 wickets with an economy rate of 6.46. His best bowling performance for CSK was 3/16, and he played a crucial role in the team’s IPL title wins in 2010 and 2011 under MS Dhoni’s leadership.

Apart from his bowling, Ashwin has also contributed with the bat, scoring 190 runs at a strike rate of 94 and taking 20 catches. With his experience and skill, CSK fans eagerly await his return to the yellow jersey in the upcoming season.
