Ravichandran Ashwin has been handed a fine amounting to 30 percent of his match fee for an incident that took place during the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) clash between Dindigul Dragons and Tiruppur Tamizhans on Sunday night (June 8) in Coimbatore.

The veteran all-rounder visibly showed his displeasure at an on-field umpiring decision after being given out leg-before to R. Sai Kishore. Replays suggested the ball may have pitched outside the leg stump, prompting Ashwin’s reaction.

“There was a hearing conducted by the match referee after the game,” a TNPL official told Cricbuzz.

“Ashwin was fined 10 per cent for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20 per cent for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions.” Ashwin could not be immediately reached for comment.

The match, held under floodlights at the Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science Cricket Ground, featured umpire Kritika and match referee Arjun Kripal Singh. Ashwin, who was leading the Dindigul Dragons, had already used both team reviews on wide-ball appeals and thus couldn’t challenge the lbw decision at the time of his dismissal.

A video clip of the moment has since gone viral on social media. In it, Ashwin is seen confronting the umpire right after being declared out while attempting a sweep shot. As he walked back to the pavilion, he displayed clear frustration—striking his pads with his bat and later throwing his gloves in anger.

Interestingly, the live commentary on the official TNPL website did not mention any dissent. It stated:

“4.5: Ravichandran Ashwin’s aggressive sweep attempt against a good-length delivery outside leg results in an lbw decision.”

Ashwin’s 18 Goes In Vain As Dindigul Crumble To Tiruppur

Ravichandran Ashwin contributed a brisk 18 off 11 deliveries, striking two boundaries and a six. However, his dismissal with the score at 39/1 in the fifth over sparked a dramatic batting collapse, as Dindigul Dragons lost their remaining nine wickets for just 54 runs.

In response to a modest target of 94, Tiruppur Tamizhans secured a dominant victory, winning by nine wickets with 49 balls to spare. Dindigul Dragons are currently positioned fifth on the TNPL points table, having registered one win and one loss from their first two matches.

This is the ninth season of the Tamil Nadu Premier League, which commenced on June 6 and will conclude on July 6.
