A few days after RCB skipper Rajat Patidar was caught in a strange turn of events, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recounted his own brush with a fraudster over a number exchange following the IPL 2025 season. The 38-year-old revealed that an impersonator posed as his CSK teammate Devon Conway and requested Virat Kohli’s contact number. Ashwin explained how he cleverly handled the situation.
He further said he grew suspicious when the impersonator asked for more numbers, including those of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. To confirm his doubts, Ashwin posed a tricky question, which the fraudster failed to answer, exposing the deception. Speaking on Monday, August 11, on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, the off-spinner narrated the incident in detail.
“After the IPL got over, one guy messaged me claiming to be Devon Conway, ‘Hi buddy, how are you?’ and I also responded that we’ll stay in touch. You’re playing in MLC; I’ll watch the games and all that talk.”
“He then asked, ‘I’ve missed Virat Kohli’s number, can you share Virat’s number?’ I thought Why is he asking Virat’s number. I thought I should ask him, but I didn’t want Devon Conway to misunderstand. Then I picked Virat Kohli’s card and gave him a different number.”
“Once I shared it, he replied, “I’ve lost a few more numbers.’ I asked him whose numbers, he responded, ‘Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni.’ I got suspicious and then asked him a question, ‘I gave you a bat this year, how’s that bat?’. He said the bat is amazing, and I’ve not even gave him any bat, he lied and I blocked him instantly,” Ashwin added about the encounter.

R Ashwin’s surprising disclosure came shortly after reports surfaced that RCB skipper Rajat Patidar had lost access to his previous mobile number. According to the report, a boy named Manish from Gariaband district in Chhattisgarh began receiving calls from Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.
Patidar’s old number had been reassigned to Manish after remaining inactive for 90 days. Upon purchasing the SIM card, Manish and his friend Khemraj noticed Patidar’s photo as the WhatsApp display picture. When Patidar contacted him directly, Manish refused to believe it was actually the cricketer.
The matter was eventually resolved when local police intervened. With Manish cooperating, the SIM was handed back to Patidar.
