The reigning IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru are reportedly considering a dramatic change ahead of the 2026 season by stepping away from their iconic home ground, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. This development follows the tragic stampede that occurred during the team’s title celebrations last year, an incident that resulted in the loss of 11 lives and left several others injured.
The heartbreaking episode has cast a long shadow over the venue, prompting the franchise to reassess its future association with the stadium. Sources suggest that RCB has not yet initiated discussions with the Karnataka State Cricket Association regarding hosting matches in Bengaluru next season, signalling a growing likelihood of relocation.
Safety Concerns and Emotional Impact Drive the Decision
The decision to potentially surrender the Chinnaswamy Stadium is believed to be influenced by both safety considerations and the emotional toll the incident has had on players and management.
The franchise is keen to avoid any situation that could reopen wounds for supporters or create security risks during large gatherings. Reports indicate that even senior players have been uneasy about returning to the venue.
Notably, a domestic match involving Virat Kohli in the Vijay Hazare Trophy was shifted from the Chinnaswamy at the last moment in December, further underlining concerns surrounding the stadium. While no official statement has been released, these developments suggest a cautious approach as RCB prepares to defend its maiden IPL title.
Raipur and Indore Emerge as Preferred Alternatives
With a return to Bengaluru appearing uncertain, RCB has reportedly shortlisted new venues to host its home fixtures in IPL 2026. Raipur has emerged as the leading contender, with Indore also under serious consideration. Both cities offer modern infrastructure, strong administrative support, and the ability to host matches without the intense emotional baggage currently associated with the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
A move away from Bengaluru would mark a historic shift for the franchise, which has played at the venue since the inaugural IPL season. However, the management seems prepared to prioritise player comfort, crowd safety, and logistical ease over tradition as it charts a new path for the next chapter of RCB’s journey.
