A well-known personality in English cricket is currently under police investigation over allegations of spiking the drinks of two women and sexually assaulting one of them. The Daily Telegraph reported that the man, in his 40s, was questioned by Scotland Yard in June after a complaint from a pub in south-west London’s SW6 area. The ECB has declined to comment.
“We are currently investigating allegations of spiking and sexual assault against two women that took place on Thursday, 22 May at a pub in the SW6 area,” the Metropolitan Police told ESPNcricinfo in a statement.
“Two women are believed to have been spiked with one also allegedly sexually assaulted. A man in his 40s was interviewed under caution on Thursday, 5 June. Enquiries remain ongoing and no arrests have been made at this stage.”
Chris Haward, the managing director of the Cricket Regulator — the independent body overseeing disciplinary matters in English cricket — stated last month, “Eliminating sexual misconduct from the sport is a key priority.” Over the past year, the Regulator has charged individuals on two separate occasions in relation to sexual misconduct.
In August, a coach was banned for up to nine months after being dismissed by his county for sending “sexualised and inappropriate” images to junior female staff members. Similarly, last November, another coach received a suspension of up to six months for “inappropriate sexual behaviour” during a county pre-season tour.
South Africa Beat England in Rain-Hit First T20I to Take 1-0 Lead
Talking about the England cricket team, it is currently facing South Africa in a three-match T20I series. The Harry Brook-led side is trailing 0-1 after a 14-run defeat (DLS method) in the opening game. In the rain-affected first T20I at Cardiff on Wednesday, Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch claimed two wickets each as South Africa secured victory via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.
The start of the match was delayed by almost four hours, and another rain interruption reduced what was supposed to be a 40-over contest at Sophia Gardens to just 12.5 overs in total. Chasing 69 in five overs, England managed only 54-5 as they struggled to keep up with the steep required run rate of nearly 14 per over against South Africa’s strong bowling attack.
