Reports: BCCI Urges Players To Prioritize Domestic Tournaments Over IPL

The BCCI has issued a stern directive to established Indian cricketers, urging them to prioritize domestic competitions like the Ranji Trophy over the glitz and glamour of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This admonition follows reports of several players, including prominent batsman Ishan Kishan, opting to train for the IPL rather than participate in the Ranji Trophy.

It’s worth noting that Ishan Kishan is presently training in Baroda alongside Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya and his brother Krunal Pandya. However, in the wake of these reports, it has been underscored that representing both the nation and one’s state in the Ranji Trophy should take precedence over early IPL preparations.

Kishan chose not to make himself available for selection to represent Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy, a decision that raised eyebrows among his peers. Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan also expressed confusion regarding this matter. With the BCCI’s notice to the players circulating, it remains to be seen how they will respond to this directive.

An anonymous source said: “In the next few days, all the players will be communicated to by the BCCI to play for their state team in the Ranji Trophy, as long as they are not on national duty, with only those who are unfit and recovering at the NCA being granted an exemption.”

As the 17th edition of the IPL approaches, slated to commence in the summer of 2024, the BCCI has expressed its dissatisfaction with players shifting into IPL mode as early as January, instead of focusing on national duties and the Ranji Trophy. This stance emphasizes the importance of players committing to the grassroots of Indian cricket before indulging in the lucrative IPL arena.

The BCCI’s message underscores the significance of maintaining a balance between international commitments, domestic obligations, and franchise cricket. While the IPL offers financial rewards and global exposure, it’s imperative for players to not lose sight of their roots and the foundational tournaments that have nurtured their talent.

Ultimately, the BCCI’s directive serves as a reminder to Indian cricketers that success in the IPL should complement, rather than overshadow, their contributions to the country’s cricketing landscape. Balancing ambition with responsibility is key in navigating the intricate web of professional cricket, ensuring that players remain grounded in their commitment to both national and domestic cricketing endeavors.
