Rishabh Pant being the vice-captain of Delhi Capitals is closest to replacing Shreyas Iyer as the captain of the side for the next season. However, the management and the officials are not too keen on pant replacing Iyer as the captain for IPL season 14. Iyer suffered a shoulder injury in the first ODI and was subsequently ruled out from the remaining games and the IPL season as well. The management is now looking for the next best captaincy choice with several players available.

R Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Ajinkya Rahane are some of the Indian players in the race while Steve Smith, who was bought by Delhi after being released by the Rajasthan Royals (RR), is also one of the candidates. Meanwhile, reports in TOI say that the management is not keen on Pant being handed leadership responsibilities due to his lack of experience as a leader.

DC Management Not Keen On Rishabh Pant As Captain

“Pant is the first name that pops up in everyone’s mind. He is the hot property at the moment. But a few in the management pointed out that his lack of experience in captaining a team could go against him. Also, there’s thought that the added responsibility could hamper his form,” a source told TOI.

The source further said that the management is divided over their opinion on Pant’s captaincy challenges.

“There is no consensus on who should be captain yet. There’s a faction of the management which is convinced that Pant should assume charge and then there’s another which is keen to have an experienced captain,” the source added.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer thanked his fans who wished for his speedy recovery. He is set for a surgery in April, which might keep Iyer out of action for four to five months.

“I’ve been reading your messages and have been overwhelmed by all the outpouring of love and support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone. You know what they say, the greater the setback, the stronger the comeback. I shall be back soon” Iyer wrote on his social media platforms.
