Rohit Sharma Confirms Availability For Mumbai In The Vijay Hazare Trophy Matches

Former India captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed his availability for Mumbai’s opening two matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which gets underway on December 24. The confirmation came after some uncertainty earlier in the day, with a Mumbai Cricket Association source clarifying late at night, “Rohit will be available for the first two games.”

His inclusion provides Mumbai with valuable experience at the top of the order as they begin their campaign in the prestigious domestic one-day tournament. The development followed reports that several senior players would be unavailable initially, leading to speculation about Rohit’s status before it was officially cleared.

Selection Focus On Youth As Senior Players Miss Out

Despite Rohit’s availability, Mumbai will be without a few prominent names for the opening fixtures. T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube, will not feature in at least the first two matches. Mumbai chief selector Sanjay Patil explained the decision, saying, “Jaiswal, Dube and even Rahane will not be a part of the Mumbai squad for at least the first two matches as the selection panel is going ahead with a young squad.”

He also addressed concerns regarding Jaiswal’s fitness, stating, “Yashasvi is undergoing treatment for a stomach issue, and he should be alright soon. We thought that the youngsters should be given a chance. But whenever they are available, they will be accommodated.” Emphasising the team’s short-term strategy, Patil reiterated, “But for the first two matches we are experimenting with youngsters.” The contrasting statements during the day raised questions over coordination between selectors and administrators, especially regarding Rohit’s availability.

Tournament Schedule, Venues And Group Details

The elite division of the Vijay Hazare Trophy will be played from December 24 to January 8 across Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jaipur and Bengaluru, with the knockout matches scheduled at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru from January 12 to 18. Mumbai have been placed in Group C alongside Punjab, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Goa and Himachal Pradesh.

Their campaign begins on the opening day of the tournament against Sikkim on December 24. Meanwhile, the domestic season has also seen other major developments, with India’s Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant being named captain of the Delhi team and Virat Kohli confirming his availability for a couple of matches in the national one-day championship. Together, these decisions underline the blend of experience and experimentation that teams are adopting ahead of a packed international calendar.
