Sourav Ganguly has extended his approval for Rohit Sharma to take charge at the T20 World Cup 2024, marking a significant endorsement from the former BCCI president. Ganguly played a pivotal role in transitioning the Indian T20 captaincy to Rohit following Virat Kohli’s resignation. Despite Hardik Pandya leading in most T20Is since 2022, Ganguly remains steadfast in his belief that Rohit is the optimal choice.
Sourav Ganguly said: “Rohit Sharma is the right choice as India captain for the T20 World Cup. The way he led the Indian team and won 10 matches in the 50-over World Cup is still fresh in our memory. So, Rohit was the best choice.”
Speculation arose after India’s semifinal exit in the 2022 T20 World Cup, highlighting Rohit’s sole triumph in the Asia Cup ODI and his failure to secure three ICC trophies. With age potentially working against him, questions surfaced regarding whether Rohit should yield leadership to Hardik Pandya.
“I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados” – Jay Shah
However, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah swiftly quashed such conjecture by confirming Rohit’s leadership for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024, putting any doubts to rest.
Jay Shah said: “We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts thereby winning 10 matches in a row. I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados.”
Following the England Tests, Rohit Sharma is set to participate in the IPL. However, he won’t be assuming leadership duties for the Mumbai Indians, as the franchise has named Hardik Pandya as their new captain.
