There is no denying to the fact that Rohit Sharma is one of the few best captaincy choices available for India. He has led Mumbai Indians to four IPL triumphs, making them the most successful franchise of IPL. Speaking of the same, Rohit Sharma revealed how he was made captain of the team.

In 2010, Mumbai Indians came close to winning the IPL title but they were undone by an MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings in the final. In 2011 and 2012, Mumbai continued their good run by reaching the play-offs but the final berth eluded them in both the seasons despite their star-studded line-up.

Ricky Ponting wanted me to take forward – Rohit Sharma

Nonetheless, 2013 was a different story altogether. While Ricky Ponting took over the reins as captain before the season, he stepped down from the role midway and himself asked Rohit Sharma to lead the side when others were thinking about Dinesh Karthik.

From 2013 onwards, Rohit-led Mumbai has won the championship on four occasions (2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019) and remain the most successful franchise in the tournament’s history; closely followed by arch-rivals, MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

“I was part of the Pragyan Ojha trade from DC and that’s when I thought I could be captain. I thought I have to be ready when the opportunity comes my way. They got Ponting in the auction (in 2013),” Sharma recalled the moment.

”I can’t compete with him. Some people were thinking we can go with DK (Dinesh Karthik). But Ponting called me and said I want you to take it forward,” Rohit Sharma said during a conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin on Instagram live.
