India’s batter Shubman Gill missed the chance to capitalize on his start during the first innings of the fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He was dismissed right before lunch on Day 1.
Earlier, after KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal fell in quick succession following India’s decision to bat, Gill and Virat Kohli took on the challenging task of settling in. Despite the Australian bowlers maintaining tight lines and lengths, the duo held firm in defense and began to build a partnership.
However, just as the session appeared evenly poised, Gill’s lapse in concentration handed the advantage to the hosts. India went into lunch at 57/3 on the opening day in Sydney.
Until that point, Shubman Gill had handled Nathan Lyon well. However, on the final ball of the over, he stepped down the track, only to edge the ball, allowing Steve Smith to take a straightforward catch in the slips.
Fans criticized Gill for throwing away his wicket after putting in significant effort. Many took a dig at him by drawing comparisons to captain Rohit Sharma. Notably, Gill had replaced the under-pressure Rohit in the playing XI for the Sydney Test.

How has Shubman Gill fared in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy?
The 25-year-old Punjab cricketer missed the opening Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth due to a finger injury. He rejoined the playing XI for the day-night Test in Adelaide, scoring 31 and 28 in his two innings.
Gill struggled at the Gabba, managing just one run before being replaced in the Boxing Day Test to make room for Rohit Sharma at the top of the order. So far, he has scored a total of 80 runs in four innings during the series.
