Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan feels Team India skipper Rohit Sharma’s level of batsmanship has done slightly from his standards. He added that the veteran batter needs to get back in touch quickly. Rohit Sharma did not have a great run in 2022 and will be keen to put things back on track in the new year. He will be leading Team India in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, starting January 10 in Guwahati.
The 35-year-old suffered a thumb injury in the second ODI against Bangladesh in December last year. He missed the third ODI, as well as the ODI series against the Tigers and the T20Is against Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma will be making his comeback in the ODI series. Speaking about the Indian skipper’s performance in the past few months, Irfan Pathan expressed during a discussion on Star Sports, as quoted by Sportskeeda,
“Absolutely, his level has gone down slightly, based on his standards. He is an amazing batter. In the five centuries he scored in the 2019 World Cup, he batted amazingly well. He will have to probably remember that and regain his form.”
“When his form comes back, this Indian team which is getting ready for the 50-over World Cup, you will not get a more solid team than India, especially in these conditions where the World Cup is going to be played,” he added.
Rohit Sharma will have to regularly pay attention to his fitness and form: Irfan Pathan
Former cricketer Irfan Pathan further expressed that Rohit Sharma will be fresh coming from a break. He stated that the Indian skipper is a “great player” and will also lead the Indian team well. However, Irfan Pathan stressed that Rohit needs to pay attention to his form as well as his fitness. He said,
“He will come back refreshed. Hopefully, he will come with preparation. He will have to regularly pay attention to his fitness and form and he will do that. He is already a great player, there is no doubt about that. There is one thing about the captaincy, he is a fantastic captain of this team. He will manage this team very well and extremely easily but two things – he needs to give a lot of attention to his form and fitness.”
